Still a high school student, Will Berman is the founder and maker of Unwashed Denim, a small business specialized in raw, selvedge denim goods.
Raw denim represents the untreated fabric used in the jeans’ production before they were mass-produced. Raw denim starts out very dark and stiff, but with constant wear the fabric softens up, develops creases and character. Some people refer to denim as a “living” fabric because of its capacity to conform to the individual wearer’s daily activities.
When he was 15, Will became more and more interested in learning everything he could about raw denim. His passion for this fabric made him want to apply its awesome aging characteristics to other commonly used goods. Although he had no knowledge of sewing or construction, Will bought a sewing machine with some money he had saved up and rapidly taught himself to sew. The beginning was full of experiments and falls, but in very short time Will built his skills into a business of handmade goods.
At the moment the young entrepreneur is very dedicated to his business, but he doesn’t neglect his schoolwork either. Still, he admits he is frequently forced to give up some things he enjoys like hanging out with friends.
Unwashed Denim is based in New York City, but the products are also available online. On the company’s site you will find carefully crafted card holders, tech accessories, and dog leads made both from denim and leather.
