When you send CVs online is very difficult to stand out from hundreds of other applications. Designer Crystal Nunn knew this too when she decided she must apply the think outside the box strategy to get her dream job. The funny thing is that she literally used a box. And not just a simple box, but one full off vegan cookies.
Now you must wonder what vegan cookies have to do with a junior designer position at a very respected London based social media agency (We are social).
The thing is Crystal conceived her unique CV according to a very well planned strategy that involved few other elements, not only cookies.
She first started with a little research and found out that a team of two acclaimed creative directors recently joined the company. One of them, James Nester, was also Co-Founder of the Beyond Dark chocolate brand. Being also a lover of baking cookies, Crystal decided to make use of her passion and worked hard for almost 2 weeks to come up with the best cookies recipe with the Beyond Dark chocolate as main ingredient. To perfect her recipe Crystal consciously respected the chocolate brand’s values: no use of dairy, wheat, gluten and nut.
After this, Crystal designed a suitable packaging for the appetizing content. The young designer created a box based on that of the brand by replicating the colors, graphics and typeface. The only thing she changed was the tagline that became ‘Beyond Ideas.’ After the box was ready she put her CV and portfolio on a USB and stuck it to the inside of the lid along with a note to catch attention.
Finally, Crystal wrapped the nice box in a brown paper, because according to her words “theres always something mystifying about packages wrapped in brown paper”, and wrote URGENT on it.
Right before she left the house to drop the package off at the company’s reception, Crystal also emailed a special HTML-based application to the agency’s dedicated email address.
Within an hour, We Are Social contacted her for an interview and, yes, she got the job. On top of her success, the enthusiast designer also received lots of chocolate from the people behind Beyond Dark who were also very impressed by her creative idea.
If you were impressed by Crystal Nunn’s creativity too and want to work with her on visual matters, or if you want to order some delicious cookies, it seems she is available for both types of collaboration. As she says on her site: www.crystalnunn.com, she loves talking to people and listening to them.
