Audrey Hepburn was a British actress and humanitarian. She was active during Hollywood’s Golden Age, being recognized as both a film and fashion icon. The actress was ranked by the American Film Institute as the third greatest female screen legend in the history of American cinema. She was preceded by Katharine Hepburn and Bette Davies.Audrey Hepburn was born on 4 May 1929 in Brussels, Belgium. Her parents divorced when Audrey was just a child due to a failing marriage and the fact that the actress’ father had been found cheating with the nanny. Audrey and her mother moved to Kent in 1937 where she was educated at an independent school in Elham. At the start of the Second World War the family moved to Arnhem in the hope that the Netherlands would remain neutral. Times were harsh and the actress suffered from malnutrition, acute anæmia and respiratory problems.
After the end of the war, the family relocated to Amsterdam where Audrey Hepburn started ballet lessons with Sonia Gaskell. She appeared in a film, for the first time, in 1948. She played the role of a stewardess in the educational travel film, Dutch in seven lessons.
In 1948, the family moved back to England, more exactly London. As a chorus girl, Audrey Hepburn performed in several musicals such as High Button Shoes or Sauce Piquante. In 1951 she had minor roles in several English movies. Her first major supporting role came in 1952 in the movie The Secret People.
Her 1953 role in Roman Holiday brought her an Academy Award for Best Actress, her first BAFTA Award for Best British Actress in a Leading Role and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Drama. The movie boosted her popularity and her next role, in Sabrina, brought her another BAFTA Award. That was only the beginning; from that moment onward Audrey Hepburn’s star continued to rise with roles in famous movies such as My Fair Lady, Breakfast at Tiffany and War and Peace.
From 1967 onward she started dedicating herself more and more to her family and less to her work. Her last major role was in 1987. Audrey Hepburn died six years later of appendiceal cancer. Have you seen any of her movies?
