Whenever we read a book, certain characters stay with us long after we have put it down. They amaze us with their complexity, their many facets and intriguing background. Sometimes they are courageous beyond belief or have uncanny intelligence. However, in many cases they are simple men and women who nonetheless become famous characters.
Young Adult fiction is aimed at teenagers aged 12 -18. The characters of these novels are created to be close to the heart of teenagers, to face the same problems and feel the same insecurities as them. Discover below several famous characters from Young Adult fiction.
1.The Golden Trio: Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley
When we say Young Adult fiction, one of the first series that springs to mind is the Harry Potter series. J.K.Rowling’s famous saga follows the adventures of its protagonists from the moment they become eleven to the moment they turn of age ( albeit one year earlier as it is the Wizardring World ). This fact allows the characters to grow with each book. Apart from their magical problems, they face the same problems teenagers do as they age: homework, tests, balls and proms, bullying and dating.
Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley are perhaps some of the most famous characters from young adult fiction. More often than not, they are remembered as a group instead of individuals because of the beautiful friendship that ties them together. However, by themselves, they are all strong characters. Hermione is remembered for her unwavering loyalty and intelligence. Harry is famous for his self-sacrificing tendencies and bravery, while Ron is the strategist of the group and the one who lifts their morale.
2. Katniss Everdeen
When Twilight hit bookshelves, the series turned into a frenzy with millions of fans. However, just as many people bemoaned the fact that while Bella Swan was at most, a typical teenager, she lacked personality and a backbone. However, when “The Hunger Games” was published, people immediately fell in love with Katniss Everdeen. Not only is she a strong female character, but her complex personality could allow her to star in other scenarios, not just the dystopian one.
If you take her away from the Hunger Games and put her in our everyday world, Katniss is a teenager that has to deal with the death of her father, the depression of her mother and the necessity to keep her family together. All these facts endear her to teenagers who might have to deal with the same things. In addition, the well thought dystopian background is a much loved bonus where her bravery, skills in battle and loyalty shine at their best. Because of these qualities, she is now among the most famous characters in YA novels.
3. Percy Jackson
Young Adult literature is, in many cases, the perfect field for female protagonists to stand up. Novels such as “Hunger Games,” “Divergemt”, “Twilight”, “Graceling” or “Vampire Diaries” are all focused on female characters. However, that is not to say there are no strong characters of the male variety out there.
Percy Jackson from Rick Riordan’s famous series is one of them. Although he is the son of Poseidon, he is far from perfect. He is short-tempered, prone to lashing out and he tends to blurt out things. These things often get him in trouble. However, he is also smart, brave and loyal. He is a natural leader and would do anything in his power to save his friends.
