Located in England, Leeds Castle is one of the most amazing and beautiful castles in the country, or maybe in the world some people may say. The castle is situated near London, in the middle of the River Len, between two islands. Leeds Castle is considered to be the most romantic castle in England.
Leeds Castle is an amazing structure made in the style of Donjon by William the Conqueror. The castle’s construction started when a Saxon lord built a manor on the land of one of the islands, on the River Len. In 1119, Robert de Crevecoeur made the stone structure and in 1278 the English monarchy took the castle. That’s when King Edward I and Eleanor of Castille, his wife, made some modifications to Leeds Castle that still remain in present day. For several years, the castle was home to many medieval queens of England.
An interesting fact is that Leeds Castle was a fortress, but King Henry VIII decided to convert it into a royal palace for Catherine of Aragon, his wife. In 1978, the castle was used to host a meeting between Israeli Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. In 1976, Leeds Castle was opened to public and maintained by the Leeds Castle Foundation.
