Even though some might discard the Harry Potter series as one for children, the fact of the matter is that J K Rowling created much more than an impressive alternate world, she created amazing female characters. Her portrayal of women is diverse but accurate and the women in the series have essential roles in the story. In the world of magic, pyshical strenght makes no difference between men and women, as both genders have the same magic and are capable of being extraordinary. Rowling says of herself that she is a feminist and that shows in the way she created her female characters, who are fierce, smart, strong and impressive.
The obvious female character that comes to mind is the smart Hermione Granger, whose loyalty and logic help the trio more often than not. However, there are several more female characters who are truly impressive.
Even though she dies years before her son finds out of his magical powers, she is one of the most important female characters in the books. She is the one who selflessly tries to save her son from Lord Voldemort and offers her life to protect Harry. Her motherly love is what keeps him safe until he comes of age and also, throughout the series, Harry turns to what little he knows about her to take comfort in times of distress.
The epitome of the mother figure, Molly is certainly one of the strongest female characters in the book. She chooses to take care of her family instead of having a career and cares for Harry as for her own. But she’s more than just a mother and she proves it in the Battle of Hogwarts, when after losing her son, she fights and kills Bellatrix in order to protect her only daughter.
Athletic, opioniated and confident, Ginny blooms into a strong women throughout the series. She is tough, having grown up with six brothers, she speaks her mind and has no issue expressing herself without caring what others think. She takes the initiative to kiss Harry and becomes his rock in the storm.
Head of the Gryffindor House, Minerva McGonagall proves her strenght throughout the series, as she is the one to undermine Dolores Umbridge in the fifth book, the one who leads the teachers to fight and protects the children during Snape’s time as Headmaster of Hogwarts. She shows her skills in combat, is an exceptionally talented witch and holds an important job at the school, as deputy Headmistress and Headmistress.
Perhaps the most prominent female villain,Death Eater par excellence, Bellatrix is certainly fascinating. She shows extreme loyalty to Voldemort, as she would do anything to please him. Rowling said that Bellatrix loved Voldemort in her own twisted way. She survived Azkaban and fought all the battles without fear.
