And told his story through photos.
Christoph Rehage has done something that the majority of us will never do. He walked over 4500 kilometers, from Beijing to Ürümqi. While back in the day traveling long distances by foot was the norm, as other means of transportation had not been invented and animals had not been domesticated, nowadays entering willingly such a voyage can baffle many. Christoph Rehage did just that: baffle us.
Christoph was born in 1981 in Germany, but spent time in the US as well as in Paris. He studied China Studies in Munich and Cinematography at Beijing Film Academy.
The Long(est) Way of Christoph Rehage
When asked about walking, Christoph says that he had walked once from Paris to Germany, a journey of 880 kilometres which lasted about a month. ” I like walking because it makes you own your way. Whenever I walk somewhere, not only do I remember the way , but I also feel like I have a legitimation to be there. I visit a place by train, and I am a tourist. I walk to the same place on foot, and the place is suddenly mine, we belong together.”
Christoph Rehage started his journey on his 26th birthday, in November of 2007. He walked a distance of 4646 km in total, ending his travel in October of 2008. I wonder what he thought during all this time. It must be tormenting for a human being to be inside his mind every second of every day. But Cristoph says ” “It was just the way it would be on any normal day. Sometimes you think. Sometimes you don’t. Sometimes you worry about passports, dangers, pains, relatives and loved ones, and at other times your steps are light and you sing songs in the desert. Sometimes it is boring. And sometimes you feel at peace.”
He ended his travel because he wanted to gain back his life. He went back to school to get his degree. His story is inspirational, as not many would be able to do what Christoph Rehage has done. It takes a lot of will power and focus in order to walk the longest way through China, wouldn’t you say so?
