Award-winning and worldwide-known American photographer Mark Laita has come up with another brilliant, totally impressive photo series about the inequalities existing in the American society in present times. Published in 2010, it took Mark eight full years to complete the series.
Inequalities: Polygamists versus Pimp
Inequalities: Motorcycle gang versus Altar boys
The pictures in black and white portray a society with multiple clashes, with huge differences between poor and rich, liberals and conservatives, and even between people representing the concepts of good and evil. The series which was created by joining to photos with totally opposing individuals from the point of view of their life and values: a polygamist with his wife – a pimp with his ‘ladies, a thief – policemen, a beauty pageant contestant – a topless dancer, amongst others. Through ‘Created Equal’ series, he wanted to stress that despite inequalities and polarization, we are all still born equal. It is only life circumstances or fate that change us.
Ballerina versus Boxer
Gang member versus Mafioso
This artist from Detroit acts in a way like an anthropologist, a sociologist focusing on the cultural and social clashes that make people born in the same country, with the same rights, to follow so different paths in life. The pairs of people he present in the photo series are very different human beings that also have a connection; but it is the connection that unites as well as divides them: policemen versus thief, Afro-American Baptist church minister versus Ku Klux Klan members, homeless versus real-estate developer, and so on.
Inequalities in America: Marine versus War veteran
More inequalities in America: Baptist minister versus Ku Klax Klan
I photograph what I love about my country, which is the American. By that I mean the individual who is shaped from more than 200 years of liberty and independence mixed with all the successes and failures that America has experienced in its short life. So here is a collection of these creatures. Tragic and wonderful, great and ordinary, they stand proud and ready for scrutiny, says Mark Laita, proud of his work and his country, too.
Homeless man versus Real estate developer
Beauty pageant contestant versus Topless dancer
Illustrating people both equal and with so many inequalities between one and the other, we find this photo series really impressive and worth taking a closer ad in-depth look at.
