Would you give your jacket to a freezing boy? This is the question that has been on everyone’s lips after seeing the viral video that warmed the hearts of millions. Fact of the matter is that when you have everything you need, you rarely stop to wonder whether others have everything too. It’s on rare occasions that we stop to think and to realize that not everyone is as lucky, that many are starving, that many have no clothing and that many know no kindness. This experiment managed to do just that: make us stop for a minute and realize how blessed we are. In addition, it made us wonder if we would have given our jacket to a little freezing boy.
Behind The Scenes
Responsible for the campaign is a non-profit organization from Norway, called SOS Children’s Village. They placed 11 -year -old Johannes on a bench, in a bus stop in Oslo, the capital city of Norway and filmed him for two days, with a hidden camera. He is seen shivering with cold, as he had no jacket and it was freezing cold outside. When asked why he doesn’t have a jacket on, the boy answered that he was on a school trip, coming from a town located some 65 kilometers from Oslo and that someone had stolen his jacket.
Out of the 12 people who approached the freezing boy, only three did not offer him any clothing. A women is seen wrapping his coat around him, while a man gives him his jacket leaving himself wearing only a T-Shirt.
The experiment of the freezing boy was designed to see if strangers would donate their jackets, as a part the charity’s winter SOS MAYDAY campaign, which aims to collect blankets and coats to send to people in Syria. “It’s a campaign to raise awareness of people in Syria,” Synne Rønning, the information head of SOS Barbebyer said. “People should care as much about children in Syria as they care about this boy at the bus top. The situation in Syria is very harsh.”
The freezing boy, Johannes, said : “There were so many nice people. We filmed for two days, and I thought maybe only three or four of them would give me their jacket altogether. But there are many more who did it. Many more than those who are shown in the video.”
The video has six million views on YouTube and has been shared on social media thousands of times, making the story of the little freezing boy who needs a jacket one of the most impressive and heart-warming stories in a while, not only because it poses such an important question, but also because it was meant to raise awareness of how bad the situation in Syria is, and remind us all that we are lucky and blessed and should help each other.
