Facebook knows a thing or two about love, thanks to millions of users who fall in love on the social network. Long gone are the days in which a shy man would ask pretty dame to a ball, where they would be chaperoned by a grumpy old lady. Long gone are even the days in which love happened offline, when couples would send letters and take strolls in the park at sunset. Nowadays, love happens online and it happens on Facebook. Love blossoms after a friend request was sent. Then a few likes given and a shy message saying ”Hello” to the one that caught your eye. But how does Facebook see love?
Based on data gathered over the course of a few years, Facebook claims it’s easy to spot two people who are about to enter a relationship. That’s because they interact more and more in the few weeks before making it official. Even though love starts online, it doesn’t mean that the courtship period has vanished. During the 100 days before the start of the relationship, a slow but steady increase in the number of time shares between the future couple is seen. After the relationship starts, posts begin to decrease, presumably due to the fact that the couple in question spends more time together, offline.
“We observe a peak of 1.67 posts per day 12 days before the relationship begins, and a lowest point of 1.53 posts per day 85 days into the relationship” declared Carlos Diuk, from Facebook Data Science.
However, even though the number of posts decreases after the start of the relationship, the posts become sweeter and happier. It seems that love keeps up with technology and social media. We fall in love on Facebook, make it official online and when we break up, it’s for the whole world to see. These are the days we live in, so we just have to adjust. Did you know that Facebook knows when people fall in love?
*This study was performed on a sample of anonymized, aggregated Timeline posts exchanged by couples worldwide, although the positive versus negative emotions focuses on posts written in English. We only considered couples who declared an anniversary date (as opposed to just changing their relationship status) between 04/11/2010 and 10/21/2013, and remained “Single” 100 days before and “In a Relationship” 100 days after their anniversary date.
