Stéphane Lambiel is a Swiss figure skater, two-time World Champion ( in 2005-2006), the 2006 Olympic silver medalist, two-time Grand Prix Champion and nine-time Swiss National Champion, famous for his spins and for the grace with which he executed them, earning him the title of Master of Spins. Truthfully one of the most talented and passionate figure skaters, Stéphane Lambiel managed to amaze his audience every time he would appear on ice. The ice skating rink became his stage, where his talent unraveled smoothly, taking the viewers on an incredible journey, where time and space faded away.
Stéphane Lambiel: The Man
Stéphane was born in Martigny, Switzerland on 2nd of April 1985, as the son of Fernanda ( his mother is Portuguese) and Jacques and as the brother of Silvia and Christophe. His passion for skating began at an early age, he was only 7, while watching his sister skate. His passion grew so intense that he spent his nights watching figure skating videos and practicing jumps in the family’s garage.
A few years later, he met his coach Peter Grutter, who has been his coach all his career, and long time choreographer Salome Brunner. For Stéphane Lambiel a new time had come: the time to dedicate himself entirely to his passion. He juggled school with figure skating, eventually earning a degree in Biology and Chemistry. He is also fluent in Portuguese, French, German, English and Italian.
Stéphane Lambiel: The Master of Spins
Lambiel ascent as an international athlete began in 2002, when he placed fourth at the European Figure Skating Championship, securing a place in the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. Over the years, he developed his unique style and technical skills, making him one of the most impressive figure skaters in history, alongside his main competitors at the time, Evgeni Plushenko and Brian Joubert. His career flourished as he conquered the World Championships twice. He retired in 2008 due to an injury, but returned to the ice in 2009, as his desire to compete was stronger than his medical restraints. During this time, he earned his ninth title as National Champion and finished fourth in the Winter Olympics of 2010. He then retired completely form competitive figure skating, focusing more on being a choreographer and a show-artist.
My personal favorite, Stéphane Lambiel certainly is one the most amazing figure skaters, whose talent really is impressive. Who is your favorite ice skater?
