‘Oi Mei’ translated from Chinese means “love beauty”, and is the most inspired name that could be given for a social enterprise. Oimei aims to empowers tribal/rural Thai women to be self-sustainable, by providing them access to new markets for their beautifully hand woven products.
The company’s founder is Aimi Duong, a young lady born and raised in Northern California, but with Southeast Asian roots.
In 2010 Aimi went to study abroad, in Bangkok, Thailand. During her studies she will have the opportunity to travel throughout Thailand and the neighboring countries. This experience will bring her to discover the unique style of the hand-crafted textiles realized in these countries. Seeing the beauty of these products Aimi Duong became intrigued how many of the talented and hardworking artisans were actually struggling to make a living. She realized that the best thing she can do is to help them gain exposure to new markets that will enable them to work for a fair wage, therefore to be self-sustainable.
In 2012 Aimi founded Oimei, using the name she received from her eldest sister who passed away in 2009. Before Oimei, Aimi dedicated a lot of time volunteering with underprivileged children and families, and also studied business for her undergraduate degree. Through this social enterprise Aimi is combining with success her passion for philanthropy and business knowledge as an entrepreneur.
Today Omei is a great help for Thai women to rise above poverty and to make known their unique crafts and inspiring stories all around the world. On their site you will also have the chance to find the life stories of few Thai women artisans. And if you wish to fill your life with more love and beauty, check also Omei Facebook page.
