The legend says that a girl died in the canals, in the proximity of the island. Her body was discovered by Barrera. After that, dolls began to wash ashore constantly. Barrera took the dolls and doll parts and hung them on the trees to ward off evil spirits from the island. Today, this is an unpopulated island, filled with dolls hung on the trees, which can be very scary.
2. Pripyat, Ukraine
Known as a ghost town, Pripyat is an abandoned city located in Ukraine. The city was founded in 1970 with the purpose to house the workers at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. In 1986, the city was abandoned. Now, anyone can visit this city, but tourists will find here an atmosphere of terror and desolation. The residents of Pripyat left the city in fear and they left everything behind, never to return.
3. Aokigahara Suicidal Forest, Japan
This forest is located in Japan, at the base of Mount Fuji. Legends associate this quiet area with demons, being said that there is something about these woods that make people commit suicide. More than 100 people came to this forest to kill themselves, which makes everyone in the area believe that this is a malefic place.
Aokigahara forest this is the second most popular place for suicides in the world, after the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge. Legend says that the Aokigahara forest was the place where, in the 19th century, families would abandon their elderly relatives to die, when they could no longer take care of them. Their spirits still live in the forest, the same legend says.
4. Hill of Crosses, Lithuania
The Hill of Crosses was described by Pope John Paul II as a “place for hope, peace and love.” This is a Catholic pilgrimage site dating back to 1830s. Even though this might be a place for hope and faith, the number of crosses makes it one of the scariest places in the world. You definitely would not want to stay too long in this place.
5. Catacombs in Paris, France
These catacombs were used during the World War II by the French Resistance. In a visit to this place, tourists can travel under the city. This can be a unique experience. However, this place is also known to hold the remains of more than 7 million people, which were placed in the catacombs because of the lack of space in the cemeteries. This might be the reason why only 1 mile out of the total of 170 miles of the catacombs are opened to the public.
