Figure skating is among the most loved winter sports of all times. Throughout the years many figure skaters, dancers and pairs have taken the spotlight. Probably the most famous male skater of the century is Evgeni Plushenko, the Olympic Champion of 2006 and Olympic Silver Medalist of 2002 and 2010. Female figure skating has also given birth to many amazing and well-known stars. One of them is Midori Ito.
Midori Ito was born in Nagoya, Japan in 1969. She started skating since she was five years old. By the time she was six, Midori Ito was already participating in figure skating competitions. Her jumping capabilities amazed Japan judges in 1980, earning her the titles of “Tsunami Girl” and “The Japanese Jumping Bean.”
In the 1988-1989 season she won her first World Championship title. Three years later, in 1992 she became the Silver Medalist of the Olympic Games. She retired from amateur skating in 1992 and turned to professional skating.
Midori Ito is famous worldwide for her amazing jumps. She is the first female skater to land a triple axel in an amateur skating competition. She is, so far, the only female skater to land such a jump in a professional competition.
However, her series of firsts does not end here. She was the first Asian to win a world skating title and the first female skater that managed to land a double triple/triple combination in a competition.
Midori Ito remains nowadays a model for young skaters everywhere. She continues to perform and coach skaters from her country. Have you seen Midori Ito in the past figure skating competitions?
