Buying a house is not an easy thing to do for a young couple in Romania. Eliza Loboncz and her boyfriend Dragos had an eccentric, but efficient and creative idea. They wanted to have a cheap, affordable house as their home, but were not at all eager to apply for a bank loan.
In Romania, young people that need to have a house of their own, and do not have one already, are encouraged by the government to apply for the “First House” Loan. You can apply for this loan at several banks and the mortgage is guaranteed by the state. This couple from Turda, a small city near Cluj-Napoca, Transylvania, Romania, did not want to get a debt for tens of years and become the ‘slaves’ of a certain bank in times of unstable economic conditions.
Eliza and Dragos came up with an unconventional, but efficient idea for their first house. They let their creative juices flow and used only innovative, Eco-sustainable materials for the building. The water used in the household is collected from rain drops, photovoltaic panels produce the electricity they need, the floors are made of insulation panels used in refrigerator trucks, while the roof is isolated with newspaper flakes. Their straw home is almost 100% independent in terms of energy. The couple managed to build their house in 15.000 Euros.

The couple has sought for models around the world and found out that this type of houses is much more enduring than most people think. The lifetime of such a house is of hundreds of years. There exist even historical buildings and ones with multiple levels made entirely of straw bales, said Eliza after thorough research on the most suitable house types for them.
The idea is already used by several architects who design eco-friendly buildings.
This idea can turn into a low-budget, sustainable business, in harmony with the environment, and can give people a chance to have a home at a decent price that they can afford. What do you think of the initiative?
