“A Christmas Carol” is a novella written by Charles Dickens. It was first published on 17 December 1843 by Chapman & Hall. It tells the story of a bitter, greedy man called Ebenezer Scrooge that no longer celebrates Christmas. In order to be shown the error of his ways he is visited by Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come.
The story was published in a time when the nostalgia for old Christmas traditions embraced the desire for new ones. The novella remains even today one of the most beautiful Christmas stories of all times.
Below, you can discover three enchanting quotes from “A Christmas Carol”:
We have often heard, while walking on the street or simply sitting down in a bus, a person laughing for a reason known only to him or her. Often, the corners of our mouths involuntarily turned upwards in a smile. Sometimes, we too start laughing. Laughter and joy are contagious. Even without wanting, when we hea a person who has a great time, we too allow ourselves to feel happy.
A person’s life and deed will often foreshadow their end. Even without knowing very well a certain person, we sometimes make predictions where he or she will end up if they continue on the same path. However, if they decided to change their ways, their road might lead them somewhere completely different. Good people can turn to evil deeds, while bad people can see the error of their ways. Their end depends on the road they choose.
It is often the little things that remain with us. Just as this quote from “A Christmas Carol” says, a smell can make us remember the past. The smell of oranges and chocolate can take us back to Christmases long forgotten. Often, all these smells simply hide in a corner of our mind and appear when we least expect them.
