Charles Bukowski (born Karl Heinrich Bukowski) was an American poet, novelist and short story writer of German descent. His writing was highly influenced by the social and cultural environment of Los Angeles, his home city. He wrote six novels, such as Post Office and Women, thousands of poems, hundreds of short stories, a screenplay and several non-fiction books. He put an emphasis on the lives of ordinary, poor Americans, women, relationships, alcohol and writing. He relied on experience and emotion in his works and became a cult hero.
