F. Scott Fitzgerald was a man of words firstly becauses he was a writer. Fitzgerald is the mind behind the glorious and tormented character Jay Gatsby and his tragic love for Daisy. He was the man that created a world where The Beautiful and the Damned lived and the Jazz Age (a term he coined for the Roaring Twenties) was ever so appealing, he showed us This Side of Paradise and reminded us how Tender is the Night. As one of the greatest American authors, he left behind not only wondrous worlds and stories, but also words of wisdom.
Here is a selection of our favorite quotes by F Scott Fitzgerald:
Although we all know the line ” forgive and forget”, F Scott Fitzgerald casts light on it from a different angle. Once you have been able to forget a wrong someone did to you, whether intentionally or not, it is clear that you have forgiven that person. Not being able to forget is what makes us hold on to a grudge or a pain and what makes us unable to forgive.
We all find and build walls and barriers and only a selected few can cross. We build these walls for self-preservation, and, as Fitzgerald points out, we build the highest walls and place the strongest guard at the limit of our emptiness. It is quite a challenge to let someone in, to show them our most inner solitude. Probably because, as Fitzgerald said, we are ashamed of the emptiness inside us.
Indeed it is. Sometimes we live with a pain inside us for so long, it becomes part of who we are. It dictates choices, relationships, attitudes towards people. Pleasure is a fleeting thing, disappears as easily as it appears. Pain, however, is a constant mixture of emotions that never truly leaves us.
We can use words as we please: we can either hurt someone with them, or comfort them. F Scott Fitzgerald pointed out that words have the power to heal, to stroke and caress someone. Be kind, make someone happier.
Isn’t that beautifully said? All our lives we chase love, hoping that it can heal us. We love people and try to work up the courage to express what we feel. We sometimes manage to tell them, and from that moment on, everything that happens is a consequence of our feelings.
