When we think of fantasy literature, some of the most famous authors that spring in our minds are J.K.Rowling, C.S.Lewis, J.R.R.Tolkien and George Martin. When speaking of science fiction novels, we mention Isaac Asimov, H.G.Wells and Frank Herbert. Neil Gaiman is one of the several contemporary authors that have the gift of blending the two genres and create something out of the ordinary. He is known for his “Sandman” comic books and gripping novels such as “American Gods”, “Anansi Boys” or “The Graveyard Book.” His works won numerous awards among which we name the Hugo, Nebula, and Bram Stoker awards. Moreover, ”The Graveyard Book” won the Newbery and Carnegie medals.
Neil Gaiman’s life in short
Neil Gaiman was born in 1960, in Portchester, Hampshire. Five years later he and his family moved to West Sussex. As a child he loved reading. He was a fluent reader from the age of four and frequently borrowed books from the library. He was impressed by “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy and “The Chronicles of Narnia”. He also loved “Alice in Wonderland” and the Batman comic books. As a child, he was educated at many Church of England schools.
In 1984 he wrote his first book, a biography of the band Duran Duran. In the late 1980s, his second book was published, “Don’t Panic: The Official Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Companion”. In 1989 he started working on the “Sandman” comic books, the ones that made his fame grow. The last comic book was published in 1996.
Achieving fame in literature
In 1990, Neil Gaiman started a collaboration with another famous author, Terry Pratchett that ended with the publishing of the book, “Good Omens.” Six years later he published his first solo novel, “Neverwhere”. Many books followed, the most famous being “American Gods”, his first best-selling and multi-award winning novel, and “The Graveyard Book.” Some of them have been adapted into movies (“Stardust” and “Coraline”). In 2013, BBC adapted “Neverwhere” into a radio drama starring several famous actors such as Benedict Cumberbatch and James McAvoy.
In 2011 Neil Gaiman announced he is planning on writing a sequel to “American Gods.” Up to now, this sequel has not been published yet. His newest novels are “The Ocean at the end of the lane” and “Silver Dreams”, both published in 2013.
