Pottery worker might be one unusual job of the present. In the past, unusual jobs were poorly paid and utterly horrifying. Here are three odd jobs that history reveals.
1. Whipping Boy
This was a job for young boys, in the 15th century. A whipping boy would serve a prince and be whipped whenever the prince was naughty. Practically, the job was to be beaten for something someone else did. If the prince was watching someone being beaten for his mistakes, he would learn that his actions were wrong.
2. Pure Collector
“Pure” was another word for feces. Pure collector was one of the socially lower jobs of the past. A pure collector would wander about the streets, picking up animal feces and later selling them to leather factories. Those who had a bit of luck, were carrying their findings with a cart. As for the others, they used sacks.
3. The Groom of the Stool
The groom of the stool was basically a king’s bum wiper. Among other tasks, he was in charge of cleaning the monarch’s behind after using the toilet. Only sons of noblemen had a chance of taking the well respected job. The groom of the stool had a very high social status. Maybe because he knew the king at a more private level :).
