Many times during our lives, we find ourselves unable to remember certain details. We flunk exams because we forget facts from our courses. We are sometimes unable to recall the telephone number of a certain friend. Human memory has always been fickle. Research has shown there are several reasons that lead to us forgetting things. Even the weather can be an important factor. After all, our brain has to deal with a massive influx of information every day. Because of this, it develops certain mechanisms that help it cope with the information. Below, you can discover three factors that make us forget things.
Bad weather affects our memory and makes us forget things
Research has shown that bad weather can affect human memory in an important way. Many times, during storms or simple rain, we try to recall certain details only to discover we have forgotten them. The worse the weather, the easier it is to forget things. On the other hand, a nice weather has a good impact on our memory. We are able to remember things easier if the sun is shining outside and the weather is pleasant.
Numbers are the easiest things to forget
In general, people have a very hard time remembering numbers. In fact, our memory is not suited to remember them. It struggles with numbers more than it struggles to remember a poem or a certain type of plant. While letters form words that have an actual meaning and are used in a certain context, numbers seem meaningless. They must be learned by hard. Therefore, when we forget things, numbers are usually the first ones to go. Of course, the more we use them, the easier it is to remember them. Our memory comes up with coping mechanisms and eventually learns things such as pin codes or important phone numbers.
The brain focuses on details
Our brain tends to focus on specific details instead of on an overall picture. For example, if we ever stumble across a person that has incredibly long hair, we will barely remember his or her face, but will be able to perfectly recall the look of his/her hair.
Our memory is a complex mechanism that deals with a massive influx of information. Did you know that our brain can even create false memories?
