Smartphones made of phoneblocks – separate parts for every component that come together just like a Lego construction! It is just an idea for now, belonging to a smart Dutch designer, Dave Hakkens. He has the chance to make phoneblocks the smarter smartphone for the wise consumer. His idea can expand the life cycle of smartphones with replaceable parts.
What Dave Hakkens came up with has already gained support from almost 1 million people and the appreciation of reviewers. The aim is to reduce the waste of changing your phone every time something in it breaks or a new model arrives on the market.
Hakkens designed a way to upgrade or repair the smartphone piece by piece. Phone blocks are detachable parts connected to a base that you can easily assemble and reassemble, choosing from a range of possibilities and personalizing your smartphone.

Let’s say you are more interested in having a better camera or a better Internet connection. With Phoneblocks, you can choose the right component and upgrade it every time there is a chance, without throwing a good reliable phone away to get the new model.
Dave Hakkens came up with the Phoneblocks concept after he was forced to throw away his good camera just because of a broken spare part he couldn’t find in any shop.
His intention is to create this platform where different companies can get involved and built their own blocks for the Phoneblocks. Just like an app store, this platform would be the place where you can buy assembled phones or buy, sell, exchange phone blocks as you want. As he says in an interview for smartplanet.com: “The way we’ve built technology the last 30 years is not the way Phonebloks is built.”
Will it be built? Do you see Phoneblocks as a smarter way to make a smart phone?
