The Marshmallow Challenge is a fun and innovative design exercise (invented by Peter Skillman) that challenges members of a team to collaborate efficiently. In eighteen minutes teams have to build a free-standing structure using 20 sticks of spaghetti, one yard of string, one yard of tape and one marshmallow that must stay on top.
Tom Wujec, considered a leader in personal and team creativity, have conducted over 70 Marshmallow Challenges and come up with amazing conclusions. The winning teams usually are specialists, but next after them came executives administrators that have facilitation skills. It seems that the key of success is a combination of specialized skills and facilitation skills.
Here is a TED talk where Tom Wujec presents the results he came up with after applying the Marshmallow Challenge on a wide range of people.
