Even though it wasn’t quite popular in the beginning, social media has nowadays become part of our daily lives. We post pictures and comments on Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest, send messages to our friends, follow a particular brand or a celebrity we admire, join conversations about the present and the future of our countries and we get our daily news from our newsfeeds. Social media has revolutionized the face of communication, by driving new forms of interaction. It’s no longer relevant just to have an online presence, you have to generate engaging content and interact with the people who follow your updates.
Some experts suggest than social media will become the new search engine: people would spend less and less time navigating randomly on the internet and instead, guide their behavior based on word of mouth or recommendations given by friends. In this process, social media will change people’s opinions on privacy, etiquette and acceptable online behavior.
Social media numbers have grown considerably in the past years. In 2009 there were 830 million social media users worldwide and the numbers have increased since. The breakthroughs in technology have also helped the rise of social media. Studies show that more than a billion people use their smartphone to access their social media profiles. Facebook has reached the 500 million users milestone in 2010, and as a result, if Facebook were a country, it would the third most populated after China and India!
The use of social media can only increase as the years go by. It has become a vital part of communication strategies and fields such as Advertising or Branding. Social media is constantly blurring the line between work and play, as more and more users find it difficult to separate their private lives from their personal ones, both online and offline.
Fundamentally based on the idea of sharing, social media sites emphasize our need for a interconnected world. Are you a social media user? What’s your favorite tool?
