The Atlantic Road runs through an archipelago of partially inhabited islands and skerries, between the Kristiansund and Molde cities from Møre og Romsdal county. The Atlantic Road is 8.3-kilometer long and has many zigzags across eight low bridges. In the north, the fixed link passes by Hustadvika, a long section of coastline which during storms is truly dramatic.
The magnificent construction started in August 1983 and the opening took place in July 1989. 25% of the building costs was financed with tolls. Collection of tolls was supposed to last till 2004, but by 1999 the road was paid off and the toll removed.
The Atlantic Road represents a beautiful interaction between nature and architecture. When crossing the impressive road one has the opportunity to enjoy the view of the Atlantic Ocean and, if the weather is calm, see whales and seals.
The Atlantic Road is preserved as a cultural heritage site and is classified as one of the eighteen National Tourist Routes.
Road trippers and motorcyclists in need of adrenaline choose to cross The Atlantic Road in autumn, to experience the raging storms that hit the roads.
On the islands, tourist sites are established, including dining, fishing and scuba diving resorts.
The Atlantic Road, especially the Storseisundet Bridge, is a favorite place to film automotive commercials. Storseisundet Bridge is the longest and the most famous of the eight bridges. The bridge has a dramatic curve that creates a scary optical illusion because at the top of it the bridge seems to end abruptly. Storseisundet Bridge was named „The road to nowhere” by Daily Mail in 2011.
