She actually was the Queen of England for no less than 45 years, between 1558 and 1603. Against all expectations, Elizabeth decided to rule her country without marrying. Elizabeth I was the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Anne was the king’s second wife. Elizabeth’s mother was executed when the future queen was only two years old.
Elizabeth was imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1553. Mary I, the daughter of Henry VIII from his first marriage, ordered the imprisonment after she succeeded to the throne following the death of Edward, the son of Henry VIII. When Mary died, Elizabeth became queen at the age of only 25, as Mary had no children.
Despite many pressure and several courtship, Elizabeth chose to never wed. This made her famous as the Virgin Queen.
