Backmasking is a process in which sounds meant to be played forwards have reversed audio signals, so that nobody can understand what it is actually said. When played normally, the words have no sense, but when played backward, a hidden message is uncovered! Some of the first instances of backmasking date back to The Beatles, who experimented with this procedure on their album “Revolver”. Since then, backmasked messages have been present in many songs, unveiling messages that range from humorous to satanic.
Below you’ll find 3 of the most famous cases of backmasking!
#1. Queen – Another One Bites the Dust
This song was extremely popular in the 80’s, and many Christian Evangelists accused Queen of hiding a reversed message in their song. The band played in reverse the lyrics: “another one bites the dust” which became “it’s fun to smoke marijuana”. The allegations were denied, and this message was considered to have been unintended!
#2. Jay-Z – Lucifer
Jay-Z is one of the most popular and appreciated rappers, and his name has been tied with a number of conspiracy theories, mostly related to the freemasons, or to the accusation of satanism. Even though these theories are highly debatable, believers think they have found undeniable proof when the song “Lucifer 9” was reversed. Played backwards, the gibberish translated into “666 murder murder Jesus 666”. The song was actually on Dangermouses’s album The Grey, which is a mash-up between The Beatles’ album The White and Jay-Z ‘ s album The Black. Dangermouse created the lyrics over The Beatles’ Revolution 9.
#3. Pink Floyd – Empty Spaces
Pink Floyd used backmasking in this song to send a funny message to those who look for hidden messages! When the gibberish is played in reverse, one can hear: “-Hello, Luka. Congratulations. You have just discovered the secret message. Please send your answer to Old Pink, care of the Funny Farm, Chalfont…
-Roger! Carolyn’s on the phone!
Many think that Old Pink is a reference to former band member, Syd Barret, who was in a psychiatric hospital – the “funny farm”.
