To keep its infrastructure at high levels the company permanently makes huge investition. Only in the first three months of 2013 the company invested $1.2 billion into its server farms. For the second quarter of this year, Google made a record investment of $1.6 billion.
It is not known exactly how many data centers Google has. There are at least 8 in North America, one in Latin America, 5 in Europe and 4 in Asia.
Generally traditional data centers use up to 1.5% of the world’s electricity. The innovative cooling system used by Google use 50% less energy than a typical data center.
A cold aisle is placed in front of the machines and it is kept around 80 degrees. An enclosed space from the rear of the servers collects the heat. To save energy, this is allowed to hit around 120 degrees. The heat is absorbed by coils filled with water. The coils are cooled by giant towers before being circulated back inside. In the center based in Belgium, Google uses recycled industrial canal; in Finland the company uses seawater.
By revealing information about its data centers, Google succeeded to create the image of a high professional company.
