Marilyn Monroe was born on the 1st of June 1926 in Los Angeles as Norma Jeane Mortenson (soon changed to Baker). The issue of her father has been a dilemma, because Marilyn did not acknowledge Martin Mortenson as her father, even though his name is on her birth certificate. Marilyn Monroe was more than just a pretty face, she was a complicated woman with a complicated life.
Marilyn Monroe’s Early Years
Gladys Baker was mentally unstable and could not provide for her young daughter, so she placed her in foster care. Young Marilyn’s life was a rollercoaster of foster families and problems. She was returned briefly to her mother’s care, but Gladys was hospitalized due to some mental episodes. Norma Jeane went on to live with her mother’s friend, Grace, during which time she became fascinated by the cinema and the movie stars. Her stay there was ended by Grace’s marriage and young Marilyn was back in the foster system. She would return briefly in Grace’s house, but leave because her husband tried to sexually abuse her. Years after, while in high school she would marry her neighbor’s son James Dougherty.
Her 4 year marriage to James Dougherty ended as Norma Jeane transitioned into Marilyn Monroe. Even though her career was blooming, Marilyn Monroe had many problems in her personal life. She was looking for love and seemed to be unable to find it and hold on to it. Her second marriage was to Joe DiMaggio, a famous baseball player. They eloped in 1954 and were married until 1956. DiMaggio had red roses delivered to her crypt for 20 years.
Her last marriage was to playwright Arthur Miller, whom she married in 1956. The third time wasn’t a charm for Marilyn Monroe so she divorced Miller in 1962. She is said to have had an affair with then president of the USA, John F. Kennedy. Her last public appearance was while she sang Happy Birthday Mr. President.
In 1962, aged 36, Marilyn Monroe was found dead on her estate, after years of struggling with depression.
Even though she was and remains a sex symbol and an icon of Hollywood glamour, Marilyn Monroe led a complicated and difficult life, as she rose to fame and searched for love. Are you a fan of hers?
