For as long as it has existed, literature has been in permanent evolution. Every century brought with it new trends and new literary currents. The 21st century brought a boom in literature that redefined several genres. Some of them evolved, some changed completely and others sprouted new branches. If we ask a person on the street to name some of the greatest books of the 20th century, he or she will quickly name “The Great Gatsby”, “A Farewell to Arms” or “Love in Time of the Cholera.” But what are, so far, the most amazing books of the 21st century? We present five of them below.
1. The Road by Cormac McCarthy
This 2006 novel is a dramatic account of a father’s struggle to keep his son safe in a post-apocalyptic world. The Road sets itself apart from other novels of the same genre, due to the sheer hopelessness of the situation and the desolate surroundings. In this novel almost all life on Earth has been whipped out.
2. Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell
Definitely one of the the most amazing books of the 21st century, Cloud Atlas has won the British Book Awards Literary Fiction Award and the Richard & Judy Book of the Year award. It was also nominated for the 2004 Booker Prize, Nebula Award, Arthur C. Clarke Award and several others. This 2004 novel spins six magnificent stories that take the reader from the 19th century to a post-apocalyptic world of the future.
3. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Dystopian novels have seen a rise in popularity during the 21st century, in part thanks to Suzanne Collins’ chilling novel, The Hunger Games. In a post-apocalyptic world, in the country of Panem, twenty-four boys and girls are randomly selected to participate in vicious Games where only one will survive.
4. Atonement by Ian McEwan
Atonement is a family saga novel written by Ian McEwan and published in 2001. It is considered one of the most amazing books of the 21st century because of its dramatic plot spanning four separate temporal periods. The action of the books takes place before, during and after World War II.
5. The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
Last on our list is The Time Traveler’s Wife. This novel that tells the tale of a man with a genetic disorder that forces him to travel in time and the way in which his wife copes with his disappearances. The story was inspired by the author’s often disappointing love life.
