A sphinx is a mythical creature described as having the body of a lion and a human head. In Greek mythology it was believed that a sphinx had the head of a woman and also wings belonging to a great bird. As opposed to the Greek sphinx, the Egyptian one usually has the head of a man, as we can see when looking at the Great Sphinx of Giza. It is the largest monolith statue in the world. Archaeologists believe the Great Sphinx had been built during the reign of the Pharaoh Khafra about four and a half thousand years ago.
The Great Sphinx is one of Egypt’s most important symbols. Throughout the years, it has come to represent strength, beauty and wisdom. The biggest marvel about the Sphinx is that it has not been built piece by piece. On the contrary, it was carved out of a giant limestone. It was measured at 73.5 m long, 19.3 m wide and 20.22 m high.
Nobody knows the original name of the statue. It has received its name due to the similarity to the mythological creature. However, in none of the ancient writings of Egypt is the monument ever mentioned. As a result we have no knowing what its builders perceived it to be. It is believed that it may have been a divine symbol, most likely bearing the face of a king.
Throughout the centuries, the monument has been battered by the weather and vandalism. Archaeological discoveries led scientists to believe that, at one point, the Sphinx’s visage was painted red. Traces of blue and yellow color have also been found, but no one can tell in which places they had been used.
To this day, nobody knows who created the Great Sphinx or for what purposes. Several theories have been speculated, but archaeologists have not managed to reach an unanimous conclusion. Have you ever seen this magnificent monument?
