Amelia Earhart was born in 1897, in Kansas USA. She was an American aviation pioneer and best-selling author. Her books about her flights were inspirational and instrumental in the formation of The Ninety-Nines, an organization for female pilots. She was also counseling women on career choices and spreading her love of flying. Since early on, she was an avid advocate of equality between sexes.
Since her childhood, Amelia Earhart showed a strong spirit of adventure, a spirit that has stayed with her until the very end. Even though at first she wasn’t impressed by airplanes and flying, during a show performed by World War One pilots she fell in love with planes. From that moment on, she felt the urge of learning to fly. And so, she did. Her first flying lesson lasted about 10 minutes and cost her father a small fortune. Since that day, she spent her time trying to master flying and fitting in with the other pilots. She chopped her hair short, chose a leather jacket and fought for her dream.
1932- Amelia Earhart and the First Solo Transatlantic Flight
After spending many years learning the craft of flying, Amelia Earhart decided to fly solo across the Atlantic, just like a man by the name of Charles Lindbergh had done in 1927. On the morning of May 20, Amelia Earhart set off from Newfoundland. After a flight that lasted 14 hours and 56 minutes, she landed in Northern Ireland. As the first woman to fly nonstop across the Atlantic Ocean, Amelia Earhart received many awards and decorations and her fame grew only bigger.
Flying around the World
After her success with flying solo, Amelia Earhart planned to fly around the world. Her first attempt at doing so failed, managing only to fly from Oakland to Honolulu. She gave it another go, and arrived in Lae, New Guinee on June 29, 1937. She only had 7,000 miles left to complete her journey in Howland Island. Unfortunately, due to several errors , she never landed on the island and was never to be found. She disappeared on July 2nd 1937, aged 39.
Amelia Earhart has been an inspiration for women around the world. She showed everyone that a woman was just as capable as a man, and fought for women’s rights.
