Craiova is Romania’s 6th largest city and the capital of Dolj County. Located in the southern part of the country, Craiova is at a somewhat equal distance from the Carphatians and the Danube. It’s the most important city in Oltenia( south of Romania) and has been a prosperous regional trading centre for a long time now.
Craiova has many landmarks worth visiting, such as Madonna Dudu Church. Built in the 18th century, this church has always attracted visitors. In the 19th century, this beautiful church was destroyed by an earthquake and was then restored.
Another place to see in Craiova is the Botanical Garden. Botanist Alexandru Buia was the one to create the garden, out of his wish to offer his students a place where they could conduct their activities and research. The Botanical Garden is organized in six areas, where you can see plants found worldwide or plants that can be found only in Oltenia.
While in Craiova, one musn’t miss the chance of visiting Nicolae Romanescu Park, an oasis of tranquility in a busy city. Here you can unwind and simply take pleasure in the beauty that surrounds you. The plans for the park was awarded a Gold Medal at a World Fair in 1900. By 1903, the park was completed and open for the public. It is the largest and most well-known park in Craiova.
Craiova might be a small city compared to other European cities, but it has its own charm. Even though many people haven’t even heard of it, those who visit it fall in love with it.
