Niagara Falls is actually a collective name for three waterfalls, that form a natural border between Ontario, Canada and the USA. It was formed during the last Ice Age, when the water from the newly formed Great Lakes carved their way to the Atlantic.
Niagara Falls is made up of : Horseshoe Falls– which drops about 53 meters- is the largest of three, followed by American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. Niagara Falls is renowned not for its beauty but also because it is an impressive source of hydroelectric power.
The verdant colour of the water comes from the tones of salt that are being dissolved by the minute. Even though it is quite large, Niagara Falls was completely frozen in 1911.
What’s actually interesting is the fact that even though Niagara Falls is extremely well known around the world, it isn’t the tallest waterfall. It has, however the largest waterfall by volume of water. Niagara Falls owes its fame partly to all the Hollywood attention it received, movies such as Niagara- starring Marilyn Monroe, or Pirates of the Carribean- at World’s End were shot there.
On the American side, Niagara Falls can be seen from walkways along Prospect Point Park, while on the Canadian side, Queen Victoria Park offers underground walkways which give the impression of being within the falling water of Niagara Falls.
